SAM GROVER AND THE MOONLIGHTERS BAND BIOS
SAM GROVER AND THE MOONLIGHTERS is an animal of a different style- When we talk about our blues, early rock n' roll, and Louisiana-influenced Country-surf sound, this is where it comes from-
Sam brings in a country guitar style from the 1940's to the late 70's. He was influenced by Buck Owens and Joe Maphis, who went to the west coast in the '50s, as well as Memphis guitarists of the time. His style also includes the sound of the surf guitarists who grew up listening to Joe and Buck out on the west coast. With an earthy vocal delivery, Sam's style is uniquely his own!
When we add in Jean-Louis' native New Orleans style of bass playing, for us it ties a lot of elements of great American Music together since so much of our modern-day music has descended from music developed in this Louisiana city! Rock, blues, country and gospel sound like they were just being played in different places in the same town. We know they really were, too!
We don't separate those ideas. There's no fun in that!
SAM GROVER- guitar/vocal- Lead Guitarist & Lead Singer. From the Torrington,CT area Sam has been playing country music for 40 years. In the late 60’s he organized his first band, “The Country Moonlighters”. This group worked together until 1975. Sam’s biggest influences were the Bakersfield (California- Buck Owens) and the Memphis Sounds. In 1975-77 he played lead guitar for the “Country Blazers”. The 80’s was a time of new growth for Sam, playing Bluegrass with “The Yellow Mountain String Band”. The last 10 years or so have been spent working mostly as a single and duo with a one year stint as lead guitar for the “Country Travelers”, an old time country group.
JEAN-LOUIS ROBERTS "J-L" - bass / vocals- Sam Grover and The Moonlighters
"J-L" is the key ingredient in the Louisana sound. He was a native of New Orleans, Louisiana until I met him here in the Hartford,CT area.
JOHN E WALSH JR- drums & vocals in every group represented here / video and promo production for each band (see bio at top of page)

--- THIS IS THE SAME PAPERWORK WE HAND OUT WITH INDIVIDUAL VIDEOS
--- ON THE VIDEO PAGE WE HAVE THE SAME COMPLETE SET OF VIDEO SEGMENTS FOR YOU TO WATCH OVER THE INTERNET THAT WE HAND OUT ON VIDEO CD. ( EXCEPT IT IS OPTIMIZED FOR INTERNET STREAMING WHICH MEANS THE FIDELITY IS SLIGHTLY LOWER, BUT STILL HIGHER THAN MP3 QUALITY).

--OUR PROGRAMS--
THERE IS A PROCESS when we create our program for you.
DISCUSSION - As a percussion club teacher, youth group coordinator, camp coordinator or band director, you and we will talk about what you think your students or enthusiasts would benefit from and either use some techniques we currently employ or we will structure some exercises for your group. We are flexible enough many times to be able to adapt during the program if need be.
DEVELOPMENT -This is when we take home the results of our discussion and get to the stage of formulating our specific program as a group.
REHEARSAL - Sometimes this is part of the development, and sometimes this is nearing the culmination of an association with a school over the course of the year.
THE PROGRAM STYLES WE OFFER:
(In addition to our varied range of offerings, our discussions with you will surely yield new ideas for all of us, because we are constantly growing as players and instructors and with each presentation, always trying to incorporate what YOU the teachers would like your students to experience)
We have a number program styles we would like you to be aware of:
SCHOOL ASSEMBLIES / LIVE PERFORMANCES - We incorporate drum styles from all over the world. Many forms of percussion have come from Africa to numerous parts of the world (for example, The USA, The Caribbean, Brazil and Central America) and we work with a lot of these musical threads.
Sometimes we are able to bring percussion programs and performances to you that involve ethnic dance as well.
We love to combine many of these musical threads in our live performances as well.
WORKSHOPS FOR GENERAL MUSIC CLASSES- This is something similar to our VIDEO PRESENTATION on the VCD where you can see the details (edited) of us developing our program and then doing a presentation for a preschool day care group. EVERY SECTION OF THE PRESCHOOL PRESENTATION - (VIDEO CD- track # 7) has banner descriptions which detail the unfolding of the program. There is no sound on the kids part of the program. Watching the cues on the screen, you can see how crystal clear and comfortable Rick is with the children and his programs. Their reactions and the reactions of their daycare pros are shown quite clearly.
Each moment of this 15-minute video segment has been carefully edited right through to the credits to give a concise view of the progression (in this case) of an hour-long program for pre-school kids.
We hope you enjoy the playing at the beginning and the presentation throughout the video.
PERCUSSION CLUBS- Workshops designed for enthusiasts
BAND PERCUSSION SECTIONS- Master classes for drummers and percussionists in music programs in almost any kind of school.
Examples include: 1) TUNING AND MAINTENANCE of drumset and orchestral percussion instruments; 2) SETUP, lines of sight (following a conductor); 3) GENERAL TECHNIQUES for percussion instruments; 4) ENSEMBLE-SPECIFIC TECHNIQUES for big-band, concert band, wind ensemble, orchestra, marching band, rock, etc. 5) FIRST-TIME PREPARATION of charts 6) Reading VS. Memorization 7) ETIQUETTE- Respect for ensemble, music, conductor 8) LISTENING AND PREPARATION- Active VS. Passive – score study, historical performances and performance practices 9) Adaptations VS. Arrangements VS. Re-orchestration , etc 10) ACCOMPANIST VS. SOLOIST
And there are more- too many to print here. We will discuss those options with you.
IMPROVISATIONAL PERFORMANCES (Video CD Track # 1)-
We can also perform improvisational shows with the percussion group which combine creativity with all our knowledge of how WE imagine these instruments from all different corners of the world working together.
THERE ARE MANY MORE FACETS TO ALL OF THESE PROGRAMS
The reason we will always discuss our program with you is so we are sure we can structure our programs to help give your students the most useful and always MUSICAL drumming knowledge for their benefit.
If there is some bizarre reason we can’t fulfill your needs you won’t find out after you’ve hired us. To the best of our abilities we’ll steer you to the right people if we find your needs to be outside our scope at the time.
...JUST SO YOU KNOW... We don't get ourselves into situations where we don't know exactly what we're doing.
WE LIVE FOR THIS PERCUSSION STUFF!!

TRACKS # 1 and 7
TRACK # 1: (Group improvisation with Bill Arnold on drumset)
is an improvisational performance similar to what we might and will do on SCHOOL ASSEMBLY PERFORMANCE. We always use the materials from our workshops- thematic material and disciplines – in our performances, whether composed or improvised, so kids and adults alike can pick up readily on our ideas.
Usually the pieces will be shorter in length during most school performances, but since we aren’t playing for this showcase you will have an idea that we are seasoned pros both at listening and reacting, and also at providing information in structured settings if that’s what we need to do.
The percussion setups are examples of COMPOSITE INSTRUMENTS (larger instruments made up of normally handheld or individual instruments- EXAMPLE- Rick’s Timbales and rack-mounted percussion and The Drumset.
We combine and re-combine instruments in many fashions, but in our workshops and performances we make it clear that one needs to master the components before you can master many parts together. Each is a discipline on it’s own.
TRACK # 7: ( Full Program edited to shorter sections of a pre-school daycare performance in Springfield, MA )
is an edited-down and labeled (with video overlays) presentation for a pre-school daycare unit. EVERY SECTION OF THE PRESCHOOL PRESENTATION - (VIDEO CD track #7 ) has banner descriptions which detail the unfolding of the program. There is no sound on the kids part of the program. Watching the cues on the screen, you can see how crystal clear and comfortable Rick is with the children and his programs. Their reactions and the reactions of their daycare pros are shown quite clearly.
Each moment of the 15-minute video has been carefully edited right through to the credits to give a concise view of the progression (in this case) of an hour-long program for pre-school kids.
We hope you enjoy the playing at the beginning and the presentation throughout the video
TRACKS # 2-6
Each of these tracks illustrate a few of the component instruments in hand-drumming and stick drumming in various stages of combination, always attentive to dynamics and sound.
We sincerely hope you watch and enjoy these presentations- ANY QUESTIONS?
